Bathroom as “Power spot”… Essentialism.

Happy Wednesday everyone! It is Emi. 🙂

As I mentioned in the last post, we are buckling up and moving on to some specific areas to improve in our home… how about we start from…

Bathroom🚿?

Personally, I prioritise bathroom to be cleaned and tidied first before anywhere else. This is because I consider this space as my…

POWER SPOT

~Where I recharge, reconnect my physical and mental wellness

Bathroom is important place where we start up🌞the day, make adjustments, checking in with ourselves and unwind🌜at night. Through morning to night, we use this room for doing so many things for maintenances. When this room is in good condition… it directly makes me feel like a person who have clear mind and ready for the day!

In me and my partner’s apartment, we have 2 bathrooms. So we use one each, separately. This is a conscious decision we made when we were looking for place to move in together. I am not saying everyone should do this… Some couples or people share houses may work well together to share one bathroom (I do think it is rare though!)… and I do think it can be cute and kinda romantic to be side by side, brushing teeth together. Imagine him trimming his beard, she do her hair… 👩‍❤️‍👨

While it can be nice to share these moments, bathroom routines can be very personalised and private. Me and my partner prefer not be in each other’s way in such routine. We both have busy days and it is important to secure some time to be alone. So…we rather not make such compromise for sake of “sharing as couple”.

So this is my bathroom. 😁 I try my best to keep it neat and calm.

In previous post, I wrote about the importance of stating the functionalities of each space. Such as What feeling? What you need to achieve in this space? So I will give you clear examples from my case:

What I do in my bathroom:

  • Personal hygiene such as brushing teeth, wash face, using toilet and take shower. (Daily)
  • Skin care include both facial (Daily) and body (Fortnightly-ish)
  • Cut and trim hair, hair dye (Monthly)
  • Hair ironing, styling hair (Daily)
  • Make up (Daily)

I noted down the frequency of what i do here (e.g.: “daily”, “monthly”) due to it serves as key factors when I decide where to place certain things in the space.

I like to keep my bathroom as STRESS-FREE area. So, I make my storage cabinet behind mirror doors into 2 SECTIONS.

Left

Do not use everyday

  • Laser hair treatment (Fortnightly-ish)
  • Mouthwash (Fortnightly), haircut tools (Monthly)
  • Cottons in the pink tin and other loose things such as eye drops, floss. (Not necessary daily use)

Right

Use daily and frequently

  • Perfumes (Daily) and mermaid 🧜🏽‍♀️ figurine (because it helps me to feel little bit girly 🤭)
  • Skin and hair products, deodorant (Daily)
  • Personal hygiene tools, and make ups. (Daily)

I like to keep in this way, so I do not need to constantly open both left and right mirror doors for reaching things during my daily whatever routine. Also, keep similarly functioning products together helps us to have a smooth process in getting on to your skincare, applying make up, or styling your hair.

So generally, my cabinet looks like this when both left and right doors are open. My current bathroom is helping me to feel:

Calm😌 Effortless✌️ Motivated🌱 Efficient⏱️

Everything I have in this space has specific reason… they are not merely for decorative.

🌱 minimal amount of plant…helps me to feel fresh and energised. ⏱️ Clock…. Avoid constantly touching the phone📱to check time. With Just one glance to know how much time I have during busy morning routine.

I do think as a woman, I own significantly few things for toiletries. Except things in the cabinet, all I have are hair iron, hair drier, hair spray, spare sunscreens for summer and few stocks of body oils for refill, sanitary products, and spare towels or toothbrushes. I have a shelf under the sink to put those spare things, cleaning tools… and that is all i have in the bathroom. I have not yet show my shower section in detail, but currently it looks like this. (The picture on the first of right ↘️)

Do you think I have so few things? Or actually, these are quite a lot? It doesn’t matter… all is about if the quantities of these things are helping you in the way you desire them to be. Important steps to achieve this is to….

Yes, get rid of some extra things that you have in the bathroom first.

Do you have sooo many products, and sometime they slow yourself down? I think often among people who apply make up… we have too much of it, yet still getting more. (And struggle to organise them?)

Currently my only make-upy things are just these:

  • 1 Tinted sunscreen
  • 1 Face powder
  • 1 Lip stick
  • 1 eyebrow stick
  • 1 eyeliner
  • 4 eye shadow sticks (to have 2 types of shades)

In total: 9 items

Stored in here with snail 🐌 and box ⇨

They are quite enough for me to feel presentable and ready to mingle… both casually and professionally. 💃🕺

Needless to say, i am not a make up guru.🤓 I am not very into studying what foundation has the best result in moisturise, has great cover… or checking other criteria when people buy those things. I eliminated a lot of other steps and products because I simply feel not necessary, personally for me. I only have one face! …don’t you too?

I used to have other things, such as primer, multiple colours of eyeliners, mascaras, many kinds of coloured tone-up lotions…and much more. (Just enough to fill all space in my current cabinet!) I just found that I never use everything, and feel guilty to not able to fully make use of them. Some of you may feel it is essential for you to have mascara… maybe you feel fine without eyebrow products but you need more colour choice of lipsticks… So the above example is just an end result that only make sense for me! You do you.

Make up is just one example of a category what we may have in the bathroom. Maybe you are somebody who is very into hair products, you have beard trimming routine, or others… so what kind of things we are dealing with are so different.

However… essentially, who reach the minimalist lifestyle is someone who really know what they they want to see in their life, and what important things makes them who they are. I do believe each one of our process of getting rid of things can be very relatable. There are literally limitless things we can address here…

How about next we talk about…

The trick word and misleading trend of “organising”?

See you next week! 🐌☕️
