Minimalist camper! Joy of having little.

Hello everyone, hope you were having great week! Today I am here to report back to you how was my partner and my last camping experience! ⛺️🌲We went for last Tuesday and Wednesday. It was not our first time camping together, but fourth. We definitely became better at packing efficiently and bringing less things. Packing less for camping is important for both of us…

because we wanted to be close to the nature as much as possible by just having enough to support our needs for a day and a half.

We were able to relax🌲😌, sit still and listen to bird chirping🐦… hearing animals (Mostly kangaroos 🦘) jumping and stomping on branches far away in the night… it was magical! We could focus on just being present! We needed those moments to detox from our urban city life.

Why is this related to minimalism you may ask… Well, for people who love to soak all the relaxation and healing energy that nature gives us during camping… we love to bring less stress and distraction into the experience. That was exactly me and my partner’s intention. Let me show you what we brought into the camping trip!

Beside and food and cooking tools… we got bellowing camping tools:

These were absolutely the only thing we packed. We packed pillows and quilt too, just for extra comfort as the air mattress are not as supportive of our back as we prefer to be. These bedding things were the only “very extra” things we included for the trip. With these tools, we built our home base!

We were so lucky with the beautiful weather 🌞, and so private as no people were around. We felt like Adam and Eve… that this is our paradise! 🌸

The world was gorgeous. Silent… peaceful… full of life.

We definitely packed very less kitchen tools for making three meals while we were there. We cooked lunch, dinner on first day and breakfast for another day. We did packed more for food and ingredients. We gotta eat! That’s one of the best part of camping… cooking food on the fire! Right?? 😆 But here are the things we DID NOT BRING DELIBERATELY :

  • 🚫Plates and cutleries 🍽️ 🥄
  • 🚫Wash clothes, sponges or towels 🧽
  • 🚫Coffee making tools (such as French press, vacuum press) ☕️

Why you may ask… so that we do not have lots of things to clean, and deal with after we finish our trip! We love to improvise and come up with solutions with our instinct! 🧠💪 here’s some examples for that:

  • Piling rocks 🪨under a corner of grill rack to make stove!
  • Chicken took long to cook, but we don’t have oven… put a PAN ON TOP! So the heat will be trapped with chicken longer 😆
  • Did not have bowl for the marinating sauce… Cut the plastic water bottle to fashion a container 🔪 for holding the sauce!
  • Have no brush to spread sauce evenly on chicken. We used disposable wash clothes instead! This is versatile tool! We used this for cleaning, placing food as well!
  • We had no plates and cutleries. 🍽️ so… our menus were all food that we can just pick up and eat… such as sandwiches and tacos!
  • Turkish bread 🥖 for: fish and salad sandwich🐟🥗! Egg bacon sandwich 🍳 🥓!
  • Tortilla for: smocked chicken tacos 🍗🌮 !

Me and my partner LOVE Coffee ☕️❤️! But we tried to see if we can make them without fancy tools.

  • We brought oat milk,
  • Grounded coffee bean
  • Water
  • We measured how much milk we need in cup,
  • Poured milk in to pot, added coffee powder to heat.
  • We used sieve to strain them into cups.
  • Oh, and because we do not have spoon 🚫🥄to stir the coffee…
  • We picked up a branch and used it to stir.
  • The coffee tasted Smokey, punchy and heart warming with slowly cooking fire 🔥! 😋

There is just overflow of positive, healthy energy we get from cooking food, preparing drinks when we camp. We might think with more tools, campers can do much more various activities. It can be true. However, I prefer my partner Aaron’s attitude toward camping and food creativity. He says:

Limitation will fuel your creativity! 🌋✨

I agree completely… when I had first camping experience, I was very surprised with how little things we actually needed to survive out there. I packed so much things for first few times as I was worried with scenarios of situation that we needed things. “What if we need towels to clean? Pack two extra…”

“what if it is so sunny? I will pack hat, sunscreen…” “what if…” Actually, the more I had, I felt that they were becoming burden. It is just my personal thought… but I felt silly that I dressed up, have semi-full make up, and prepared several outfits, brought books and drawing supplies (just in case i got bored) and more random things with me. I realised that when I am camping out in the nature, I’d rather focus on just being… not to have my actions based on materials. So foolish! Being restricted by my physical possessions when there’s option to appreciate the world.

The following picture is from our first trip of camping. I absolutely loved the purity of creation we had that came from having less resources.

  • Tree stump 🪵& kitchen station: no exaggeration… my favourite kitchen I have ever used!

Camping night is hauntingly beautiful. 🌒 It also challenge our weak little heart. It is humbling experience.

How often we experience complete silence? Darkness? and loneliness? The night chills you to the core, makes you appreciate more of warmth and light provided by the camp fire. With out campfire and light, it is pitch black in the air! We can not even see anything that is few steps away. Yes, it is scary… makes us feel that we are small part of the great nature and we also need to let the night go past just like other creatures.

We love making conversation but that night, me and Aaron we sit closely, just watched the fire burning down the woods. We were feeling peaceful and amazed by the beauty of campfire. 🔥Depend on how we manipulate and how we feed the fire, it moves differently. It cracks and sparks… spit out bright red charcoal in the pit and they look like Safire. ☄️✨ The heat steams the moisture in the wood, making steady or pacing breathing sounds.🌬️ As it grow bigger, woods let out smoke in fast pace and getting smaller. But when the fire clam down, it slowly wave side to side as we slow down the pace of burning woods… flame cling to edge of fire wood and it looked like they are slowly chewing on them.

It’s dark, cold, bit scary in the night but… it gave us a reward too. We could not take any picture of them, but the stars in the sky were beautiful! They were twinkling so brightly ✨ I drew a simple picture (at the bellow) from my memory:

They were so astonishing, I sprained my neck from kept looking up! It was worth it! 😁 We were very much the happy campers! Can not wait to get back out again…!

I see you again soon! 💫
